The UK Chapter of the International Geosynthetic Society (IGS) will be hosting its 4th symposium at Manchester City FC’s Etihad Stadium on the 12th and 13th May 2020. The main themes of the symposium will be Containment Engineering and Geosynthetics in Brownfield remediation.

About the Event

12th May: Containment Engineering (08:30 to 17:00)

This technical seminar will explore how containment engineering principles applied to non-waste applications can inform our practice, learn from experience outside of the UK to inform better design practice and innovation.

The symposium will be strongly practice focussed while informed by what is emerging from recent research, of interest to designers and practitioners in the field. Actual case histories from different countries will be presented, including best practices, cases where challenges have been encountered and non-standard design approaches.

Applications in mining and extreme environmental settings will be also discussed during the symposium, as a lens to explore and possibly challenge standard engineering design practices.

13th May: Geosynthetics in Brownfield remediation (08:30 to 17:00)

We take a journey through time, current and emerging guidance documents, and best practice in this technical seminar; understanding issues presented with Brownfield development and how Geosynthetics can assist with unlocking the potential of contaminated sites.

The symposium begins by exploring the very site we are on (Etihad Stadium), and from there we take a look at current guidance, best practice and emerging guidance, of interest to designers and practitioners in the field.

Leading onto actual case studies and examples whereby Geosynthetics have been utilised to enable development of sites in some of the most aggressive ground conditions.

A final workshop and open Q+A session around problem solving with Geosynthetic solutions will round off the day.

The Seminar is aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of sustainable and appropriate use of Geosynthetics for all stake holders including, developers, local authority, insurance providers, engineers, architects and suppliers/manufacturers.
