Reinforced soil systems, and especially panel systems, have been used on the UK road network for several decades to provide effective and efficient retaining walls on the approches to bridges and
flyovers. This presentation covers the use of such structures on the northern approaches to the Queensferry Crossing, constructed as a replacement for the original Forth Road Bridge, on the north
side of the Forth Estuary.
This presentation includes an overview of the essential elements of the Macres panel system employed on the project and techniques used in order to produce a final design. It concludes with details of construction techniques, including the use of locally available materials to reduce the overall environmental impact of this element of the project.
About the Speaker
Aaron Laing is currently Contracts Engineer responsible for internal design and coordinating external design for Maccaferri Construction, as well as responsibility for contract execution. He holds a BEng. in Civil Engineering and has more than 16 years of experience in earth retaining structures and reinforced slope systems, with an extensive experience of working for a range of public and private clients.
Mike Horton is currently Technical Manager for Maccaferri in the UK and Ireland, having previously held technical sales and technical/research roles at Tensar, and a previous stint at Maccaferri as a Sales Engineer. He has a BSc. in Geological Sciences, has undertaken research for British Coal and has over 30 years experience of geotechnical engineering, including in local government, consultancy and ground investigation. He currently provides technical support and advice to Sales and Design teams within the UK, including managing risk.
