Synopsis:
John Cowland was assigned the task of introducing the first liner into solid waste landfills in Hong Kong in 1986. He has been passionate about geosynthetics ever since.
Hong Kong landfills are some of the biggest in the world and they are located in steep valleys. In this presentation John will describe his work on lining steep slopes and also using large geogrid reinforced fill structures to increase the void space in the landfills

John Cowland is an Independent Geotechnical Engineering Consultant, based in Hong Kong, who has provided advice to more than 60 government and private sector clients throughout the Asia Pacific region on geotechnical, environmental and geosynthetic projects.
John was a Council Member of the IGS from 2000 to 2014 and he is a Past Chairman of AGS HK. He is also a member of the ISSMGE Technical Committee TC215 on Environmental Geotechnics and TC 221 on Tailings and Mine Waste. John has published over 50 technical papers on geosynthetics and geotechnical engineering.
